Epson AM-C4000 Review: Is It Really Better Than Laser?

Kevin Bowden

Managing Director, Bowden Digitec

The Epson AM-C4000 is a 40-page-per-minute A3 colour inkjet MFP. On paper, that sounds like any other office copier. In practice, it's a fundamentally different machine from the laser copiers most businesses are used to. We've installed dozens of them across Kent and London. Here's our honest assessment.

What It Does Brilliantly

First page out in 6 seconds. Most laser machines take 10 to 20 seconds to warm up from sleep. The AM-C4000 is ready almost instantly because there's no heat element. In a busy office where people are printing short jobs throughout the day, that difference adds up.

Running costs are lower. No fuser to replace, no drum unit, no waste toner container. The only consumables are ink cartridges. Electricity usage is up to 65% lower than equivalent laser machines because there's no heat involved. Over a 5-year lease, the savings are significant. For a business running three or four of these across different offices, the combined saving is substantial.

Virtually silent. Laser copiers have fans running constantly to manage heat. The AM-C4000 barely makes a noise. Open-plan offices notice the difference immediately.

99% fewer consumable parts. This isn't marketing spin. It's measurable. Laser machines produce waste toner, used drums, and fuser units. Epson inkjet produces almost none of that.

Where It Falls Short

Glossy print finish. If you need that high-gloss, almost photographic finish (think estate agent window cards or luxury property brochures) laser still has the edge. The AM-C4000 produces excellent colour output, but the finish is more matte than glossy. For 90% of office printing, this doesn't matter. For marketing-heavy businesses, it might.

Brand perception. Some people still associate inkjet with cheap home printers that smudge and run out of ink. The AM-C4000 is nothing like that. It's a commercial-grade machine built for 100,000+ pages per month. But you occasionally have to overcome that perception with new clients.

Availability of third-party supplies. With laser, you can usually find compatible toner cartridges. Epson's ink system uses proprietary cartridges. The trade-off is that genuine Epson ink is included in our managed print agreements anyway, so this rarely matters in practice.

Real-World Performance

In offices we've installed the AM-C4000, the feedback is consistently positive. The things people notice first: it's quiet, it's fast, and the toner never runs out unexpectedly (because we monitor it remotely and send replacements automatically).

Print quality for everyday documents (letters, reports, presentations, spreadsheets) is indistinguishable from laser. Colour charts and graphs look sharp. Photos look good but not quite laser-glossy.

Reliability has been excellent. Fewer moving parts means fewer things to go wrong. We've had significantly fewer callouts on Epson inkjet machines compared to equivalent laser models.

Who Should Get One

Yes: General offices, schools, NHS practices, accountants, solicitors, any business where running costs and sustainability matter more than glossy marketing material. Multi-site organisations looking to standardise on a reliable, cost-effective fleet.

Maybe: Estate agents and marketing-heavy businesses. Try it first and see if the print quality meets your specific needs.

No: Production print environments that need 80+ ppm or specialist finishing. That's a different category entirely.

Our Verdict

The AM-C4000 is better than laser for most office environments. Lower running costs, less waste, less noise, faster first page. The only reason to choose laser over it is if you specifically need a high-gloss colour finish.

We sell both. Epson inkjet and laser from Sharp and Develop ineo. We're not pushing one over the other. We recommend whatever fits. But for most businesses, the AM-C4000 is the smarter choice. Ring us on 0800 009 6770 for a demo.
