Inkjet vs Laser for Business: What's Actually Changed

If you asked most office managers five years ago about inkjet printers, they'd probably say something like "they're fine for home but not for business." Fair enough. That used to be true. Desktop inkjets were slow, the cartridges cost a fortune, and the print quality wasn't great on plain paper.

What's Changed

Epson's WorkForce Enterprise range changed the conversation. These aren't your home inkjet with a bigger body. They're purpose-built business machines using PrecisionCore Heat-Free line-head technology. They print at 40, 50 or 60 pages per minute. First page out in under 6 seconds. That's faster than most lasers.

The key difference is how they work. A laser printer uses heat to fuse toner onto paper, which is why it takes time to warm up, uses more power, and eventually needs a fuser unit replaced (usually a few hundred quid). An inkjet fires ink directly onto the page. No heat, no warm-up, no fuser.

Speed

This used to be laser's big advantage. Not anymore. The Epson AM-C6000 does 60ppm in colour, matching or beating most colour lasers at that speed. First page out is 5.6 seconds. From sleep mode, it's ready almost instantly because there's nothing to heat up.

Running Costs

This is where it gets interesting. Laser machines have the toner, the drum, the fuser, the transfer belt. All consumables that need replacing. A Heat-Free inkjet has the ink and that's about it. Epson quotes up to 99% fewer consumable parts than laser, and from what we've seen servicing both types for years, that stacks up. Fewer parts breaking means fewer engineer visits, too.

Print Quality

On plain office paper, both are good. Laser gives you that slightly crisp, almost embossed feel. Inkjet is smooth and clean. For colour documents like presentations and marketing materials, modern business inkjets actually produce better colour on plain paper because they're not relying on heat fusion. The DURABrite Pro pigment inks are water and smudge resistant, so durability isn't an issue.

Environmental Impact

This is where inkjet pulls well ahead. No heat means dramatically less energy. Fewer consumable parts means less waste going to landfill. So Should You Switch?

Depends on your setup. If your current laser fleet works fine and you're happy with the costs, there's no rush.
